Neil Henderson, a guitarist who helped get the Bay City Rollers started before the band became one of Scotland’s biggest musical exports, has died at the age of 73. Henderson was part of the early Bay City Rollers lineup and later became a guitarist and songwriter with another successful Scottish group, Middle of the Road. His former bandmates announced his death in September 2026, saying he had been dealing with health problems for some time. Henderson had suffered a stroke several years ago and had been recovering from its effects. His daughters, Heather and Shona, were also mentioned in the tributes.
Henderson's connection to the Bay City Rollers began around 1970, when the group was still a young Scottish band trying to make a name for itself. At that point, nobody could have known just how huge the Rollers would eventually become. Henderson played guitar on “Keep On Dancing,” which was released in 1971 and became the band's first major hit. The song reached No. 9 on the U.K. singles chart, giving the group its first Top 10 success and helping put the Bay City Rollers on the musical map.
Henderson stayed with the Bay City Rollers for about two years before leaving around 1972. According to accounts from his family, he wasn't happy with the musical direction the band was taking. His departure came before the Bay City Rollers exploded into international stardom. A few years later, the band would become famous around the world with songs such as “Saturday Night” and “Money Honey,” and thousands of screaming fans would help create what became known as “Rollermania.” Henderson, however, had already moved on to the next chapter of his musical career.
That next chapter came with Middle of the Road, another Scottish group that had already found international success. The band was known for songs including “Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep,” “Tweedle Dee, Tweedle Dum” and “Soley Soley.” Henderson joined the group as a guitarist and songwriter and spent years performing and working on music with them. He helped write songs and remained part of the band's musical story during its successful years. His former Middle of the Road bandmates later remembered him as an important guitarist, songwriter and friend.
Music remained an important part of Henderson's life even after his major touring years were behind him. According to his daughter Shona, Henderson continued making music and eventually set up a recording studio at his home in western Scotland following the death of his wife. It gave him a place to continue working with music and recording long after his days of playing in major touring bands were over. For Henderson, music wasn't simply a career that ended when the touring stopped. It remained something that stayed with him throughout his life.
Tributes began coming from musicians who remembered Henderson and his contribution to the Bay City Rollers story. Stuart “Woody” Wood, who later became a guitarist with the Bay City Rollers during their biggest years, offered his condolences. Wood said that although he had never met Henderson himself, former Rollers bassist Alan Longmuir had spoken highly of him. That connection is a reminder that Henderson was part of the band's history before the world knew the Bay City Rollers as a major pop sensation.
Neil Henderson's story is an important part of the early history of the Bay City Rollers. He wasn't there for the band's biggest years, but he was there when the group was still finding its sound and trying to get its first records heard. His guitar playing helped the band reach its first Top 10 hit, and he went on to build another chapter of his career with Middle of the Road. Henderson leaves behind his daughters Heather and Shona, along with family, friends and fellow musicians who remember the music he made. His career may have begun with the early Bay City Rollers, but his musical journey continued for decades after he left the group.
