"Indie Rock’s Quirky Crowd-Pleasers"
(Artist Report)
Written by: Ginny Gaines
The Wombats are a three-piece indie rock band from Liverpool, England, that formed back in 2003. The members are Matthew “Murph” Murphy (vocals, guitar, keys), Tord Øverland Knudsen (bass, from Norway), and Dan Haggis (drums, keys, backing vocals). They met while studying at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, a music school co-founded by Paul McCartney. They quickly clicked thanks to their shared love of music and offbeat humor.
They’ve released several albums over the years, each showing how their sound has grown. Their early songs like “Let’s Dance to Joy Division” and “Moving to New York” were loud and full of energy. Later albums like Glitterbug and Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life, added more smoother sounds and deeper lyrics. Their newest album, Oh! The Ocean (2025), includes songs like “Blood on the Hospital Floor” and “Sorry I’m Late, I Didn’t Want To Come”, which mix emotion with their usual quirky style.
A Wombats gig is always high-energy, fun, and a little bit silly. They’re known for inflatable wombat mascots, sing-alongs, and a party like atmosphere. They’ve played huge festivals and many venues building a loyal fan base in the UK, Australia, and the US. Their lyrics are clever and often funny, talking about love, anxiety, and life’s weird moments. Even when they sing about serious stuff, they keep things playful and relatable.
Their videos are just as creative as their songs—some are animated, some are funny, and some are emotional. For example, Blood on the Hospital Floor” uses dance and animation to tell a deeper story and “Sorry I’m Late…” pokes fun at social awkwardness in a lighthearted way. Even after two decades, they’ve stayed relevant especially when Greek Tragedy blew up on TikTok years after its release, introducing them to a whole new generation.

The Wombats have built a loyal fanbase by being honest, weird, and fun. Their songs speak to people who feel a little lost or overwhelmed, but want to dance anyway. They’re still going strong, touring in 2025 and bringing their latest album to fans around the world. Whether you’re new to them or a longtime fan, The Wombats are always worth a listen.
