"Spinal Tap II: The End Continues – Review"

(Artist Report)

Written by: Jake Beach

More than four decades after This Is Spinal Tap redefined the mockumentary, the loudest band in rock is back. Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, directed once again by Rob Reiner as the ever-earnest documentarian Marty DiBergi, reunites Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer for one final encore. The result is a film steeped in nostalgia, peppered with cameos, and tinged with the melancholy of time passed.

For longtime fans, seeing Nigel Tufnel, David St. Hubbins and Derek Smalls back together is half the fun. Their chemistry remains intact, even if their energy has softened with age. Classic gags resurface—yes, Stonehenge makes an appearance—as do running jokes about disappearing drummers. Some of these callbacks earn big laughs; others play more like affectionate nods to the faithful.

The band members’ lives post-fame provide new comic fodder: David has been reduced to composing phone hold music and dabbling in podcasts, Nigel has retreated into cheese-making and folk, while Derek presides over a glue museum. The absurdity is still there, even if the punchlines land more gently than in 1984.

What made the original film a cult classic was its razor-sharp skewering of rock excess and music industry pretension. This time around, the satire is more subdued. With rock’s golden age long behind us, the targets aren’t quite as fresh. The film occasionally struggles to decide whether it wants to lampoon modern music culture or simply revel in its own legacy.

That legacy looms large. Cameos from the likes of Paul McCartney, Elton John, Questlove, and Garth Brooks add spectacle, but at times they underline the sequel’s tendency to lean on celebrity presence rather than sharp wit.

Where the film surprises is in its undercurrent of poignancy. Amid the pratfalls and stage disasters lies a meditation on aging, friendship and relevance. Watching these characters reckon with time gone by—while still clinging to their Spinal Tap identities—brings a bittersweet weight the original never aimed for.

Spinal Tap II: The End Continues isn’t the cultural lightning bolt its predecessor was. The laughs are fewer, the satire less biting, and the pace sometimes meandering. But for fans, the reunion carries undeniable charm. It feels less like a reinvention than a curtain call—a chance to catch up with old friends, see the amps go to eleven one more time, and laugh at the absurdity of it all.
