Formed in 2017, William the Conqueror emerged as a fresh force in the indie rock scene, blending Americana, blues, and grunge influences with a distinctive narrative approach. The band's creation was rooted in the creative evolution of Ruarri Joseph, a Scottish singer-songwriter who had spent years honing his craft as a solo artist. Seeking a new direction, Joseph formed the trio with bassist Naomi Holmes and drummer Harry Harding. The band’s formation marked a departure from Joseph’s previous work, embracing a more raw, collaborative sound.

Their debut album, Proud Disturber of the Peace (2017), introduced the band’s unique blend of storytelling and Americana-inspired rock. The album quickly garnered attention and was shortlisted for UK Americana Album of the Year. Critics hailed it for its introspective lyrics and unflinching examination of the complexities of personal identity and disillusionment. Drawing inspiration from Joseph’s own experiences, as well as his wife’s work in the mental health field, the album marks a new chapter for the band. It’s a raw, emotional record that explores vulnerability, loss, and the process of healing. Critics have praised the album for its authenticity, with many highlighting the band's ability to tackle such a personal subject with sensitivity and grace.

Today, William the Conqueror continues to tour and connect with their audience.
