Today we are giving you the run down on the legendary band, Queens of the Stone Age (QOTSA), the desert rock titans! Led by the enigmatic Josh Homme, remain a commanding force in modern music, blending raw power, sly wit, and sonic experimentation. With a career spanning nearly three decades, the band has wrote their page in the history books and built its legacy as one of rock’s most influential acts of the era, consistently pushing boundaries while staying true to their gritty roots.

Formed in 1996 in Palm Desert, California, following the dissolution of Homme’s previous band Kyuss, QOTSA emerged from the stoner rock scene with their self-titled debut album in 1998. The record’s sludgy riffs and hypnotic grooves laid the groundwork for their signature sound. However, it was their 2002 breakthrough album, “Songs for the Deaf”, featuring hits like “No One Knows” and “Go With the Flow,” that catapulted them to global acclaim. Bolstered by Dave Grohl’s thunderous drumming and Nick Oliveri’s feral energy, the album is widely regarded as a modern rock classic.

QOTSA’s ability to evolve while maintaining their core identity has been key to their longevity. Albums like “Lullabies to Paralyze” (2005), “Era Vulgaris” (2007), and “… Like Clockwork” (2013) showcase their versatility, weaving elements of blues, punk rock, and psychedelia into their hard-hitting sound. “…Like Clockwork”, in particular, marked an introspective turn, with Homme grappling with personal struggles following a near-fatal medical ordeal. The album’s haunting beauty earned critical acclaim and a Grammy nomination. We could literally take any album from this band and do a full report, these guys are master minds.

In 2023, the band released their eighth studio album, “In Times New Roman…”, a visceral return to form that tackled themes of loss, resilience, and defiance. Produced by Homme and mixed by Mark Rankin, the album’s searing tracks like “Emotion Sickness” and “Paper Machete” reaffirmed QOTSA’s knack for crafting anthems that are both cathartic and cerebral. The accompanying world tour, which wrapped in 2024, saw the band deliver massive performances across festivals like Glastonbury and Primavera Sound, proving the power of rock music.

The current lineup—Josh Homme (vocals/guitar), Troy Van Leeuwen (guitar), Dean Fertita (keyboards/guitar), Michael Shuman (bass), and Jon Theodore (drums)—is a powerhouse set of musical minds, each member bringing distinct flair to the band’s dynamic sound. Homme, the sole constant member, is not only the band’s creative linchpin but also a prolific collaborator, having worked with artists like Iggy Pop, Arctic Monkeys, and Eagles of Death Metal. His side project, The Desert Sessions, continues to serve as a creative sandbox for musicians across genres.

Despite their success, QOTSA has faced challenges, including lineup changes, personal struggles, and Homme’s ongoing health issues. Yet, their resilience shines through, with Homme’s sardonic humor and uncompromising vision steering the band and help the rock scene. Queens Of The Stone Age have paved the way for bands and helped created the sub genre “Desert Rock” many bands list QOTSA as a core influence and you can hear their sound bleed through in the music of others. The hand Homme has played in rock music is one that will bleed into generation to come.

In 2025 QOTSA has a giant tour schedule, with a mix of international and North American dates, showcasing their continued global draw. The band kicks off their European leg in July with performances at festivals like Pohoda in Trenčín, Slovakia, and Pistoia Blues in Italy, alongside headlining shows in Vienna, Austria, and Budapest, Hungary, among others. Their North American "Catacombs Tour" begins October 2nd in Chicago, hitting historic theaters in cities like Toronto, Philadelphia, and New Orleans through November, with a special stop at Bonnaroo on June 15. Supported by acts like The Kills and Blondshell. With 40 concerts across 22 countries, the band’s schedule reflects their enduring spirit and commitment to the music.
