"Through the Veil: How Neonach Translates Solitude into Ritual Soundscapes"
(Artist Report)

In a world obsessed with labels, appearances, and neatly packaged identities, there’s something refreshing about an artist who leaves a little mystery in the room. There is a certain kind of loneliness that can only be understood in the dark. It lives in the spaces between thoughts, in the quiet after the world goes still, and in the parts of ourselves we rarely allow anyone else to see. Neonach is an experimental ambient, darkwave, and ritual music project created by musician and voice artist Craig Douglas, based in western Massachusetts.
Through ambient soundscapes, and the mystery of a masked figure, art becomes more than something we listen to. Sometimes, the art becomes us.
I had the opportunity to get deep with Neonach, someone that creates a world of his own, leaving the door cracked just enough for the rest of us to step inside. Independent art has never needed permission to exist. It happens in bedrooms, borrowed spaces, and the beautifully chaotic corners of life where inspiration refuses to wait for the right moment. Sometimes, the most revealing thing about an artist is what they choose not to show us.
For this artist, the mystery may be part of the appeal, but what lies beneath the surface opens up a much bigger conversation about identity, creative freedom, and the power of art to make us look inward. It becomes a place to disappear, to confront ourselves, and perhaps, to feel a little less alone.
The man behind the mask of Neonach, Craig Douglas gave me an in depth look into his world, his music, and his mind. He explained that he had been writing songs his whole life. Craig had other musical projects in the past, including Omega Vague, with shoegaze and dream pop influences. He stepped away, experienced an ego death of sorts.
As he put it, “I didn’t want to be pigeonholed into any particular style. I wanted to make music that I wanted to hear, not necessarily inspired by any particular artist, but instead it was more the intention of playing around with various styles. Neonach became a project where I wanted it to be whatever it is in the moment.” Channeling lyrics and becoming a “flow-state” when performing behind the mask.
Drawing from ambient, ethereal, industrial, dark, synthwave, ritualistic, and folk-prog experimental textures, Neonach’s music evokes a range of influences while remaining elusive, almost hypnotic vocal style weaves through these sonic layers. One could easily find themselves lost in a forest maze of dark, cinematic soundscapes. As our conversation turned to the artists who helped shape his musical identity, I found his admiration for Peter Gabriel, Devin Townsend, Pink Floyd, Danny Elfman, and Heilung a combination of artists I rarely encounter in the same conversation, hinting at the eclectic nature of his own artistic vision.
We talked about isolation and its ability to turn our attention inward, allowing us to transform and reconnect with parts of ourselves we can forget exist amid the constant demands of a busy society. For Craig the Covid pandemic became an unexpected space of discovery. Being the sole creator of this endeavor takes a lot of energy and passion. Working endlessly to write, produce and release independently, putting out seven albums in one year! Craig reveals, “They were all different projects of different styles of music. Neonach became a reinvention of sorts.”
Neonach isn’t currently touring, but does perform as much as possible in the Northeast United States. With a large discography to support of albums, singles, and EPs, the latest album to date being:
Exuvia (Released in August, 2026)
