"Hiss Golden Messenger Delivers His Most Soul‑Bearing Album Yet"

On May 1, 2026, the band Hiss Golden Messenger quietly released a new album called I’m People. At first glance, it’s just another record, but, when you look closer, it feels more like a snapshot of a person trying to make sense of life in real time. At the center of it all is M.C. Taylor, the voice and songwriter behind the band. He had spent the last few years writing songs in different corners of the country, sitting in quiet parts of North Carolina, traveling through the deserts of New Mexico, and even working near the California coast. All those places, all those moments, slowly found their way into the music.
By the time he was ready to record, Taylor gathered a group of trusted friends and musicians and headed to a unique studio, a converted old church in upstate New York. It wasn’t about perfection. It was about feel. The goal was to capture something real; something that sounded like people playing together in a room, not something overly polished. The album’s first song people heard was “In the Middle of It,” and that title kind of says everything. Because that’s what this album is about—being right in the middle of life. Not at the beginning, not at the end, just right there in the thick of it.
As the full album unfolds, the songs touch on things most people deal with but don’t always say out loud, like getting older, raising a family, feeling unsure, wanting on a connection, and trying to hold onto hope when things feel uncertain. It doesn’t pretend everything is fine, but it doesn’t give up either. Musically, the album leans into a warm, rootsy sound, acoustic guitars, soft grooves, bits of soul and gospel influence. It feels lived-in, like something you’d hear on a long drive or late at night when things finally get quiet. Something we all long for I think.
There are 12 songs in total, and together they feel less like separate tracks and more like chapters in a story. Some are reflective, some are a little restless, and some feel like small moments of peace. But they all connect back to the same idea: what it means to be human right now. Sometimes that's really tough to get through. Even the release date, May 1, fits the mood. It’s a time often tied to renewal and change, and in a way, that’s what this album represents. A new chapter for Taylor and the band, especially since it’s their first release on a new record label after many years in the same place.
After the album came out, the band hit the road, bringing these songs to audiences across the country. And that’s where the music really comes alive, shared in a room full of people who might hear their own lives reflected back at them. In the end, I’m People isn’t trying to be flashy or larger-than life. It’s something quieter than that, but maybe more meaningful. It’s about the everyday struggles, the small victories, and the constant push and pull of life. It’s about being human. And sometimes, that’s more than enough.
