"The Relentless Minimalists Who Redefined British Rock"

(Artist Report)

Written by: Jake Beach

By 2011, Worthing, England, had quietly become the birthplace of one of rock’s most surprising disruptors. In the seaside town near Brighton, Mike Kerr and Ben Thatcher formed Royal Blood, a band that would soon prove you don’t need more than two musicians to shake the foundations of the genre.

Kerr, handling both vocals and bass, and Thatcher on drums, forged their partnership after stints in other projects, including an early incarnation of Royal Blood in Australia. United by years of shared musical history, they opted to remain a duo, discovering that their combined force amplified by Kerr’s innovative pedal board wizardry could fill the sonic space of a quartet. Their chemistry, honed since their teenage years, became the band’s secret weapon.

Royal Blood’s ascent accelerated in late 2013 with the release of their debut single “Out of the Black”—a track whose raw ferocity and spartan arrangement caught the industry’s ear. Their underground buzz turned mainstream after Arctic Monkeys’ drummer Matt Helders sported their T-shirt at Glastonbury, propelling them into the limelight overnight.

But at the heart of Royal Blood’s story is a lesson in creative constraint. By banishing the traditional guitarist, Kerr and Thatcher forced the bass to shoulder melodic and harmonic responsibilities, transforming a limitation into an unmistakable signature sound.

Royal Blood’s key alchemy lies in conjuring the wallop of a full rock ensemble from just two instruments. Kerr achieves this with a complex network of effects, splitting his bass signal to mimic both guitar and bass tones. The result: a bruising, groove-heavy soundscape that borrows from hard rock, garage, blues, and stoner rock traditions, but is unmistakably their own.

The band’s minimalist setup isn’t just practical, it’s philosophical. Their stripped-back approach, both live and in the studio, channels a kind of muscular austerity. In a world of overproduction, Royal Blood’s refusal to add unnecessary layers feels almost rebellious, an echo of artistic movements that found power in restraint.

Their 2014 self-titled debut was an instant phenomenon, crashing into the UK charts at number one and becoming the fastest-selling British rock debut in years. Hits like “Out of the Black,” “Little Monster,” and “Figure It Out” delivered unrelenting riffs and thunderous rhythms, with lyrics exploring desire and deceit through the lens of turbulent relationships.

By 2017’s “How Did We Get So Dark?”, Royal Blood began to stretch their formula, introducing richer melodies and introspection. Tracks such as “Lights Out” and “I Only Lie When I Love You” revealed a band willing to dig deeper emotionally, hinting at new artistic horizons.

The arrival of “Typhoons” in 2021 marked a bold pivot. Embracing dance-rock and electronic influences, Kerr and Thatcher retained their trademark force but added a sheen of modern polish and infectious rhythm. Their evolution continued with 2023’s “Back to the Water Below,” a record that wove introspective songwriting into the band’s heavy tapestry, demonstrating a decade’s worth of artistic growth.

Royal Blood’s live reputation is the stuff of modern rock legend. Renowned for their unyielding energy, the duo has commanded stages from Glastonbury to Reading & Leeds with a setup as sparse as their recordings, just bass, drums, and a tower of effects. Yet that simplicity translates into thunderous volume and laser precision.

Controversy has sometimes followed. At BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend in 2023, Kerr’s sarcastic jabs at the audience’s enthusiasm and a headline-grabbing gesture as he left the stage sparked debate about the boundaries between rock authenticity and festival decorum.

In their lyrics, Royal Blood rarely romanticise relationships; instead, they cast them as psychological battlegrounds, rife with manipulation and volatility. Album titles like “How Did We Get So Dark?” and “Back to the Water Below” suggest a band unafraid of introspection and descent.

Their visual identity, anchored by Dan Hillier’s surreal artwork, amplifies the sense of mythic struggle and psychological tension that permeates their music. Even their instrumentation uses the bass as a lead voice, subverting rock’s usual hierarchies, underscoring their taste for creative rebellion.

Royal Blood’s commercial impact is undeniable. With both their debut and sophomore albums topping the UK charts, they’ve become torchbearers for British rock’s resurgence in a landscape often dominated by pop and electronic music.

Critical reception has ranged from effusive to skeptical. While some praise their raw energy and inventiveness, others see a reliance on familiar rock tropes. Yet the band’s willingness to evolve has secured their place at the forefront of the rock revival of their generation.

As of 2025, Royal Blood shows no signs of slowing down. Their sound continues to morph, folding in dance, synth, and melodic experimentation while holding tight to the primal force that made their name. Their enduring challenge: to balance the urgency of their origins with ever-deepening artistry.

At its core, Royal Blood’s journey is a testament to the power of reinvention. By pushing boundaries with minimal resources, they’ve become a modern case study in how artistic identity thrives on constraint and why the most exciting stories are often forged from what’s left out
