“Songs Carved in Smoke and Light: Whiskerman’s New EP”
( Artist Update )
Written by: Ginny Gaines
On January 23, 2026, Whiskerman quietly rolled out the first chapter of a new musical journey, a six-song EP called American Hell Pt. I. Instead of releasing a full album all at once, they decided to tell the story in pieces. This is Part One, with more to come later. Imagine the band back in the studio in Oakland, instruments plugged in, lights low, working through songs again and again until they feel just right. That’s what this EP sounds like; a group of seasoned musicians taking their time and building something carefully.
The record opens with “Reaching.” It feels like the start of a road trip at sunrise. There’s a steady groove, warm harmonies, and a sense of looking ahead. Guest singer Kendra McKinley joins in, and the blend of voices gives the song a rich, full feeling, like two friends sharing the wheel and the story. Next comes “The Dregs.” The rhythm kicks in stronger here. The bass and drums lock together in a funky, toe-tapping groove. It’s the kind of song that makes you nod your head without even realizing it. The guitars swirl around the beat, giving it texture without crowding the sound.
Then “USME” steps forward as one of the EP’s most energetic moments. It’s bold and confident, driven by tight percussion and Graham Patzner’s expressive vocals. You can feel the band leaning into the groove, stretching out just enough to let the song breathe. With “Junkman,” the tone gets a little grittier. The guitars have more bite, and the rhythm feels earthy and grounded. It’s straightforward rock, no tricks, just solid playing and attitude.
“The Master,” featuring Kelly McFarling, shifts things again. The duet adds depth, like two voices telling different sides of the same story. It’s moody but controlled, letting the vocals carry the emotion. Finally, the EP closes with “Lightning Love.” This one feels warm and uplifting. The melody sticks with you, and the harmonies give it a sense of closeness, kind of like a campfire song at the end of a long night. It leaves you feeling satisfied but curious about what’s next.
Overall, American Hell Pt. I sounds like a band that knows exactly who they are. There’s rock at the core, but you can hear touches of funk, blues, and a bit of psychedelia woven throughout. The production feels natural, real instruments, real voices, no unnecessary polish.
If this EP is the opening chapter, it’s a strong one. It feels like Whiskerman settling into their sound, telling their story their way, and inviting listeners along for the rest of the ride.
