The Modbeats are a four-piece rock band that formed in Cherry Hill, New Jersey in 2023. The current members are Philip Dunn (Vocals and guitar), Joe Mandia (Guitar), Scott Matison (Bass), and Fizz (drums). They all share a love for old-school rock and roll, mixing styles like surf rock, blues, garage rock, and even a bit of psychedelic flair. They put out music through a small independent label called Mayleen Records.

The Modbeats take inspiration from legends like Buddy Holly and The Byrds, but they also remind people of punky, raw artists like Wreckless Eric. Their music is kind of catchy but deep and emotional but fun. If you’re into The Jam, The Yardbirds, or 60s British Invasion sounds, you’ll hear that influence right away. Philip Dunn’s singing has been described as intense and fresh, like he’s really feeling every word.

In the summer 2024, they put out their first singles titled "Ballad of a Starving Artist" and "Rocking Chair". In November 2024, they released their next single titled “Fairweather Friends," a harmony-heavy pop-rock tune. In December The Modbeats released their next single, a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Just Like a Woman." Their single “The Setting Sons” was released in February 2025. Next single was released in April 2025 titled “The Passers-Bye." The band released their latest single titled "Frankie” in July 2025.

They’re planning to release more singles and are working on a full album, expected to be released in September 2025. You can find their music on streaming platforms and follow them on social media or their website. This album will be released on both vinyl and digital formats. Most of their songs have been recorded at Lakehouse Studio in Asbury Park with engineer Nick Semanchik. They’ve also brought in Bryan Haring (from The Gaslight Anthem) to help with vocal harmonies and piano on some tracks.

Since forming, they’ve been playing clubs around New Jersey and Philadelphia, including The Fire in Philly and The Chubby Pickle in Highlands, NJ. They’ve also made it into New York City and Atlantic City as their fanbase has grown. They were named one of the “Hot 100 Artists of 2024” by Music Connection Magazine. Sites like Tinnitist, Rock at Night, and antiMusic have covered them, usually pointing out their jangly guitar style and throwback sound.

The Modbeats aren’t just copying old sounds—they’re bringing them back with heart and personality. If you like music that feels familiar but still surprises you, they’re worth checking out. ONE LAST NOTE, Don’t confuse these guys with the British Modbeats, a Canadian band from the 1960s. The New Jersey Modbeats are brand new, starting in 2023.
