"From Bondi Apartments to Spotify Success—Electric Live Shows and Shared Vocals That Define Rosa Maria’s Sixties Rock Revival”

Rosa Maria are a five-piece rock and roll band straight out of Sydney, Australia, and honestly, I’m so excited to dive into their story. Comprised of Broc Townsend on guitar and vocals, Bobby Diamond and Patrick Thomas on guitar, Chris Sirote on drums, and Red Velvet on bass, these guys have created something really special in the Sydney rock scene. They describe themselves as a self-proclaimed rock and roll band, and when you listen to what they’re putting out, you understand exactly what they mean. There’s this infectious energy to everything they do, and it’s clear they’re hungry to make noise and entertain.
The band came together relatively recently in the Sydney music landscape, but they’ve already made considerable waves. What I love about Rosa Maria is how they’ve tapped into something timeless—that raw, primitive garage and psychedelic sound of the nineteen sixties. They’re not trying to reinvent the wheel, but they’re doing it with such passion and authenticity that it feels fresh. There’s this fun fact about their name too, apparently Rosa Maria is a really common name in Brazil and Portugal, so they frequently get Facebook messages from people thinking they’re someone they know, including recipes, pictures of dogs wearing hats, and even a death threat. It’s quirky and speaks to their sense of humor.
Their debut album “Let It Be Known” set the foundation for what they wanted to accomplish, but it was their sophomore album “Here She Comes” released in twenty nineteen that really showed the world what Rosa Maria could do. This album took much longer to put together than their debut, and you can hear the care and intention in every track. The title track “Here She Comes” became their ultra-contagious garage hit, clocking over five hundred thousand spins on Spotify. It’s got those hip-shaking boogies, surf-swamp overtones, and all out sixties revival garage bangers packed into it. What really stands out is that the lead vocal duties are shared at times, which adds variety and gives listeners different flavors throughout the record.
One of the biggest moments in their career came when “Here She Comes” was featured in episode seven of Amazon’s “Outer Range” starring Josh Brolin. That kind of placement is huge for a band like this, and it shows that their music resonates beyond just the rock community. Third Eye Stimuli Records helped make that happen, and that’s where this gets really interesting. Third Eye Stimuli is an Australian independent label founded around twenty fifteen by Josh White and Rick Snowden when they were living together in a tiny apartment in Bondi Beach, Sydney. These two were also performing in their band The Grease Arrestor at the time. The seed for the label actually came from them traveling in the US back in twenty twelve when they discovered Burger Records in Anaheim, California. They felt this incredible buzz around what Burger was doing, and it inspired them to bring that same energy and ethos back to the Australian music scene. That’s the kind of relationship Rosa Maria has built—with people who genuinely care about supporting great music and elevating emerging artists.
Their live shows are notoriously electric—there’s this chemistry between the band members that just oozes off the stage. When you combine their insatiable lust to entertain with that raw guitar work and driving rhythm section, you get something that’s genuinely special to witness in person. Beyond “Here She Comes,” Rosa Maria’s catalog includes tracks like “The Crawl,” which landed on Triple J Unearthed in May twenty seventeen. That single is a perfect example of their rock and roll attitude. The guitar parts are laid back yet enthralling—at times just noodling around, other times enthusiastic chord-strumming that cements that surf rock side of their sound. They’ve also got “Howlin’ Misty Lanes,” “Release Your Love,” and “Girl in Five Zero Seven” in their catalog, each one bringing that same energy and commitment to the craft.
As for their latest activity, Rosa Maria continues to be a force in the Sydney rock scene. They’ve earned their place on lineups like the world-renowned Vivid Festival’s music feature nights, which is no small feat. The band keeps pushing forward, playing shows and connecting with audiences who get what they’re doing. There’s real momentum there, and you can feel it in everything they touch.
