Spoon formed in Austin, Texas back in 1993. Fronted by singer-guitarist Britt Daniel, the band mixes garage rock, post-punk, and soulful grooves into something instantly recognizable and always tight.
They first got noticed nationally with 2001’s Girls Can Tell and 2002’s Kill the Moonlight. Those albums showed off their sharp songwriting and catchy hooks that set them apart from the crowded indie scene.
By 2005, Gimme Fiction really put them on the map. It debuted at number 44 on the Billboard 200 and sold over 300,000 copies in the US. The standout single “I Turn My Camera On” became a fan favorite with its funky, danceable vibe and got a music video that captured their rad energy.
In 2007 came Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, which climbed all the way to number 10 on the Billboard 200. The album kept that signature Spoon snap with tracks full of clever lyrics and tight rhythms that critics loved.
2010’s Transference hit even higher, peaking at number 4 on the Billboard 200. It showed the band getting more experimental while still sounding like themselves.
Then in 2014, after a four-year break, They Want My Soul became one of their biggest releases. It peaked at number 4 on the Billboard 200. Singles like “Rent I Pay,” “Inside Out,” and “Do You” all got official music videos, with “Inside Out” turning into a live staple thanks to its driving groove. To support the album, Spoon launched a major North American tour that included sold-out shows at iconic venues like the 9:30 Club in Washington DC, the Fillmore in San Francisco, and Terminal 5 in New York City. They also hit major festivals including Coachella and Austin City Limits that year, bringing their high-energy live set to massive crowds.
2017’s Hot Thoughts took a slightly different turn, leaning into psychedelic and danceable sounds. The title track “Hot Thoughts” got a slick music video, and “Can I Sit Next To You” also had one.
Their latest album, Lucifer On The Sofa, dropped in February 2022. It features raw, riff-heavy tracks like “The Hardest Cut” with its Halloween-themed video, “Wild” with a Western-style tribute video, and “My Babe.” The album earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Album and got rave reviews.
Right now in 2026, Spoon is staying busy on the road. They’ve announced a co-headline summer tour with The Beths across the East Coast and Midwest, plus festival dates like Green River Festival. Fans can catch that classic Spoon energy live all summer long.
The band keeps proving they’re one of indie rock’s most reliable acts, always delivering sharp songs and great shows.
