“Fuzzy, Chaotic, and Unforgettable: The Murlocs’ Decade of Garage-Psych Mayhem”
(Artist Report)
Written by: Rex Harlan
The Murlocs are a five piece garage-psych band from Geelong, just outside Melbourne, Australia. They formed in 2010 when Ambrose Kenny-Smith pulled together a group of friends who were all obsessed with raw, blown-out ’60s garage rock and soul.
The band is led by Ambrose on vocals, guitar, and harmonica, with a tight crew backing him, Cook Craig on bass, Cal Shortal on guitar, Tim Karmouche on keys, and Matt Blach on drums. Their sound is fuzzy, wild, and full of energy, think swirling organs, distorted harmonica, and that raw garage-psych fire that hits you right in the chest.
Since their 2014 debut “Loopholes,” the band has steadily built a killer catalog. “Young Blindness” in 2016 really put them on the map with its raw energy, while “Old Locomotive” (2017) and “Manic Candid Episode” (2019) doubled down on their fuzzy, chaotic style. Releasing “Bittersweet Demons” in 2021 and “Rapscallion” in 2022 showed even more range, and their 2023 “”record “CalmYa Farm” proved the bands ability to create a harden sound while bringing something new.
Right now The Murlocs are riding strong with their first official live album, “Live at The Teragram Ballroom,” which came out in 2024. They also just repressed their breakthrough record “Young Blindness” on vinyl. New music is already in the works and they continue to tour hard, bringing that wild, no-holds-barred live show to fans around the globe. We will keep our eyes on any new releases from The Murlocs.
