"After 50 Million Records and Decades of Riffs — Megadeth Announces Their Last Chapter"
(Short Report)
Written by: Rex Harlan
Dave Mustaine was kicked out of Metallica in 1983 — bitter, angry, and on a bus back to LA with nothing but revenge on his mind. That same year he formed Megadeth, vowing to be faster and heavier than his old band. The name came from an anti-nuclear pamphlet he read on that bus ride. Their debut, Killing Is My Business… and Business Is Good!, dropped in 1985, and they never looked back.
They exploded in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying? became a thrash classic. Rust in Peace in 1990 is still considered one of the greatest metal albums ever. Countdown to Extinction hit No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and sold millions. Overall they’ve sold over 50 million records worldwide, earned 13 Grammy nominations, and finally won one in 2017 for “Dystopia.”
After four decades of iconic riffs, constant lineup changes, and thrash metal leadership, Mustaine announced in 2025 that their 17th album — the self-titled one released in January 2026 — would be their last. It even gave them their first-ever No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
Now they’re on a massive global farewell tour through 2026 and beyond. One of metal’s true legends is going out on their own terms.
