"The Band Bringing Desert Rock to the Arctic"

(Artist Report)

Written by: Ginny Gaines

Slomosa’s story begins far away from the sun-baked deserts usually linked to heavy, riff-driven rock music. Instead, it starts in Bergen, Norway, a city known for rain, mountains, and cold weather. In 2016, a group of friends who loved loud guitars and heavy grooves came together with a simple goal: make music that felt powerful, honest, and fun to play. They weren’t chasing trends or radio hits. They just wanted to write songs that hit hard and felt real.

At first, Slomosa played around with different ideas and lineups. Early on, they released a few songs that caught attention locally, especially a track called “Horses” in 2019. That song helped introduce people to their sound, heavy, thick guitar riffs mixed with melodies you could actually remember. As the band grew, the lineup settled into the group that fans now know with the following members: Benjamin Berdous (vocals and guitar), Tor Erik Bye (guitar), Marie Moe (bass and backup vocals), and Jard Hole (drums). With this lineup, everything clicked.

In 2020, Slomosa released their self-titled debut album, Slomosa. The album made waves because it sounded familiar yet fresh. People could hear influences from bands like Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age, but Slomosa didn’t sound like a copy. Their music felt colder, heavier, and more atmospheric, like desert rock made for icy landscapes. That’s when people started calling their sound “tundra rock.”
Instead of desert heat, their music felt like wide open snowfields, long winters, and dark skies — heavy riffs with a Nordic mood.

As word spread, Slomosa became known as a killer live band. They toured constantly, playing club after club across Europe, and eventually North America. They didn’t rely on gimmicks. They won people over by playing loud, tight, and with real energy. Over time, they shared stages with well-known heavy acts like Mastodon, Helmet, High On Fire, Elder, and Orange Goblin. After hundreds of shows and years on the road, Slomosa returned with a stronger, more confident sound. In 2024, they released their second album, Tundra Rock. This album took everything they’d learned, better songwriting, tighter performances, bigger hooks, and pushed it further. The songs were still heavy, but more focused and more memorable. Tracks like “Cabin Fever,” “Battling Guns,” “Rice,” and “Red Thundra” showed a band fully comfortable in their own skin.

The album didn’t just please fans, it earned serious recognition. Tundra Rock won Best Rock Album at Norway’s Spellemannprisen, the country’s version of the Grammys. That award confirmed what many already believed: Slomosa had become one of Norway’s most important modern rock bands. By 2025, the band was touring internationally as a headliner, including their first major U.S. tours. Big-name musicians began praising them publicly, and their reputation continued to grow, not through hype, but through consistency, hard work, and great live shows.

Today, Slomosa stands as a band that proves heavy rock doesn’t have to be flashy or complicated. Their music is built on solid riffs, strong songs, and real feeling. They took a sound born in the desert and reshaped it for the frozen north, and in doing so, carved out a space that’s entirely their own. Slomosa didn’t rush their success. They earned it one song, one album, and one sweaty live show at a time.
