"21 Years of Gritty Indie Rock with new tours and new releases"
(Artist Report)

In the landscape of British indie rock, Band of Skulls represent a model of sustained determination spirit. Formed in Southampton in 2004, the band, originally consisting of Russell Marsden on guitar and vocals, Emma Richardson on bass and vocals, and Matt Hayward on drums, emerged from local DIY venues with a blues-driven sound reminiscent of The White Stripes and The Black Keys. Over two decades, they have released five studio albums, undertaken extensive tours, and managed lineup changes while continuing to entertain a dedicated fanbase attracted to their dynamic riffs and vocal harmonies. As they commemorate their 21st anniversary with a deluxe box set and an international tour, the group continues to demonstrate adaptability in an evolving music industry.
The band's formation traces back to 2002, when Marsden and Richardson, who first met at Richard Taunton College, began collaborating under the name The Souls. Hayward's addition soon formalized the lineup as Band of Skulls, a moniker drawn from pirate folklore and themes of mortality that aligned with their affinity for intense, thematic songwriting. The bands 2008 debut EP, “The Hope EP”, garnered attention from Friends of Friends Records, marking their entry into professional circles.
The 2010 album “Baby Darling Doll Face Honey”, produced by Lance Drake, served as their breakthrough release, Featuring tracks such as "I Know What I Am" and "Death to Dull Interest," it blended distorted guitars, driving rhythms, and layered vocals, earning praise for revitalizing indie rock's blues elements. The record reached No. 68 on the UK Albums Chart and secured opening slots for artists including Red Hot Chili Peppers and Arctic Monkeys. Their 2012 follow-up, “Sweet Sour”’ refined this approach with psychedelic influences, particularly on the single "Wanderlust," which gained traction on alternative radio.
The bands early operations were self-funded, with Marsden supporting tours through freelance work in graphic design and education, and initial releases distributed through platforms like MySpace. Notably, the band avoided major label controversies, maintaining a focus on artistic integrity amid the excesses common in the genre.
The mid-2010s represented a period of heightened visibility for Band of Skulls. “Himalayan”, The bands 2014 release, produced with contributions from Bill Ryder-Jones, incorporated global influences and produced standout tracks like "Asleep at the Wheel." It achieved No. 15 on the UK chart and No. 69 in the US, leading to performances at massive festivals including Coachella and Glastonbury. The next record “By Default” released in 2016, explored electronic textures, fans raved. Unfortunately this album came with Hayward's departure due to creative divergences; Jordan Cook assumed drumming duties, providing continuity for the 2020 release “Love Is All You Love” and the band continued to move forward.
Richardson's departure in 2021, after nearly two decades, drew significant attention. Marsden attributed it to personal circumstances while acknowledging the centrality of their vocal partnership to the band's identity. Richardson joined Pixies as bassist in 2024, a transition Marsden supported publicly, describing it in a May 2025 interview as a natural progression. Reviews of legal records and official statements reveal no disputes or conflicts.
In 2025, Band of Skulls pursued revitalization efforts. The July release of “Cold Fame”, a comprehensive 15th-anniversary edition of their first three albums, includes remastered tracks, unreleased material, and live recordings. Marsden, now the primary creative force alongside Cook and new bassist Novella Phillips, curated early demos that highlight the origins of their core style.
The bands performance efforts align with a extensive touring itinerary. Following a nine-year absence from North American headlining, the band announced the new “Cold Fame Tour” in August. This announcement included dates in the UK and US extending far into 2026. Beginning as support for Jet in January, the band has performed at capacity venues including First Avenue in Minneapolis and The Black Cat in Washington, D.C., with Marsden previewing potential new material for the following year. Data from ticketing platforms shows 19 confirmed dates with approximately 80% average occupancy.
The band now operates as a more streamlined ensemble under Marsden's leadership, as they begin addressing challenges posed by the absence of a full-length release since 2020 and shifts in personnel. Marsden expressed confidence in a recent Glide Magazine discussion, viewing “Cold Fame” as an opportunity to "rebuild from foundational elements."
The band's trajectory underscores the value of persistence in indie rock, where understated consistency has proven more enduring than fleeting hype. As they continue their current tour, Band of Skulls exemplifies the love for music we should all have.
