The Redwalls: A trip Through Musical Evolution

(Artist Report)

Written by: Jake Beach

The Redwalls, a band that has navigated the turbulent waters of the music industry since their formation in 2001, currently features vocalist and guitarist Logan Baren, bassist Justin Baren, and drummer Ben Greeno. Former lead guitarist Andrew Langer and a rotating cast of drummers, including founding member Jordan Kozer, who contributed to their debut album "Universal Blues," are also part of the band's history.

Initially formed while the members were still in high school, the band began as a covers group, The Pages, drawing inspiration from the British Invasion. They played their debut show at Pops for Champagne, a local jazz club known for showcasing emerging talent. With aspirations to create original music, The Pages quickly secured a regular gig at Nevin's Live, thanks to booking manager Mitchell Marlow. Marlow ultimately left his position to manage the band full-time, facilitating their transition to a more serious musical endeavor.

The band's demo recording attracted the attention of Capitol Records' A&R representative Julian Raymond, leading to their signing in mid-2003. This marked a pivotal change in their trajectory, as the label requested a name change to The Redwalls due to a conflict with another artist known as Pages. Despite the shift, the band persevered, completing their debut album "Universal Blues," which was released on November 18, 2003.

Two years later, their second studio album, titled "De Nova," was released on June 21, 2005, under Capitol Records. Shortly after its release, The Redwalls gained visibility by supporting Oasis on their UK tour and performing at Lollapalooza in both 2005 and 2006. However, in 2007, just as they were preparing to release their third album, Capitol Records dropped them from their roster. The band quickly signed with indie label MAD Dragon Records, resulting in their self-titled album "The Redwalls," which debuted on October 23, 2007. The track "Build a Bridge" was prominently featured in an AT&T commercial, further elevating their profile.

By 2008, The Redwalls attained moderate commercial success and embarked on a US tour that included appearances on "The Late Show with David Letterman" and "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno." As the year progressed, drummer Ben Greeno departed from the band and was succeeded by Rob Jensen. Their continued journey saw them touring in the UK as they opened for The Zutons. However, the lineup faced further changes when lead guitarist Andrew Langer opted to leave for other musical pursuits, citing a desire to explore new creative directions.

In 2010, session musician Duane Leinan joined The Redwalls as a bass guitarist. That same year marked a significant release: their UK debut single "Memories," which hit the airwaves on January 5, 2009. Shortly after, Rob Jensen also exited the group to focus on personal projects. Following this string of changes and departures, Justin Baren shared a heartfelt message on the band’s MySpace, reflecting on their musical journey and the collaborative spirit that has always defined The Redwalls.

Post-split, Andrew Langer joined Ezra Furman and the Harpoons as a guitarist and formed a side project called The Sleeptalkers with original Redwalls drummer Jordan Kozer. Their debut album, "Back To Earth," was self-released in 2009 and showcases the ongoing musical evolution of former members.

As The Redwalls continue to create and perform, the band's journey serves as a testament to resilience and the ever-changing landscape of the music industry. The spirit of collaboration and creativity remains at the core of their identity.
